WILKES BARRE— Big Brothers Big Sisters annual fundraiser, Bowl for Kids’ Sake will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2006 at Stanton Lanes, Wilkes-Barre. Bowl for Kids’ Sake is held in March each year to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters and the services provided by the program. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Melberger, 2006 corporate chairpersons for the event, have collaborated with the advisory board chairperson, William B. Yeager IV, and program staff to plan the event. Mr. and Mrs. Melberger of Diversified Information Technologies, Inc. have a history of volunteering their time to benefit the local community, as well as stimulate growth across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. True philanthropists, Mr. and Mrs. Melberger graciously accepted the role of 2006 Bowl for Kids’ Sake corporate chairpersons last fall. As corporate sponsors, they have since helped to identify other community-minded businesses and bolster support for the bowl-a-thon. Mr. and Mrs. Melberger have also rallied support from employees of Diversified Information Technologies, Inc., encouraging them to bowl and volunteer. Bowl for Kids’ Sake is vital to sustaining the Big Brothers Big Sisters program each year in the Greater Wilkes-Barre area. The proceeds from the event contribute to more than half of the operating budget of Big Brothers Big Sisters. In 2005, Bowl for Kids’ Sake donations totaled approximately $105,000. Last year Big Brothers Big Sisters of The Bridge served approximately 1300 children throughout the five-county service area. “With a current goal of serving 2100 children by the year 2010, the support of community leaders such as Ruth and Cliff Melberger is vital to sustaining the current level of service, and increasing the growth of the program over the next five years,” said Tanya Olaviany, Program Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The work Big Brothers Big Sisters does is proven effective through a 1995 research study conducted by Public/Private Ventures. The study, “Making a Difference: An Impact Study of Big Brothers Big Sisters,” found that children matched in the program are less likely to start using drugs and alcohol, less likely to engage in violent behavior, have improved school attendance, performance and attitudes about schoolwork, and have improved peer and family relationships. This year, Bowl for Kids’ Sake at six locations: Stanton Lanes, Wilkes-Barre, P-Nut Bowl, Bloomsburg, Shadowbrook, Tunkhannock, Bowl Arena, Hazleton, Fritz’s Lanes & Pro Shop, Lehighton, and Sky Lanes, East Stroudsburg.
