Northeast Highway Safety Program Aides Big Brothers Big Sisters in Providing Service

WILKES BARRE—Cathy Sabulski and Rebecca Uter of the Northeast Highway Safety Program are close to the hearts of those at Big Brothers Big Sisters of The Bridge this holiday season. The Northeast Highway Safety Program has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters to donate booster seats for children who have been matched in the program.  According to Pennsylvania State Law, children must be secured in a booster seat while riding in the car until they reach age eight.  Since “littles” enrolled in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program can be matched at age seven, this has created a transportation roadblock for some volunteers.  Through the donation of several child booster seats, The Northeast Highway Safety Program has enabled Big Brothers Big Sisters to continue to match younger children in the program, thus serving more families in the Wyoming Valley.

Ms. Uter has also visited a couple of Big Brothers Big Sisters school-based mentoring sites in the Wilkes-Barre area to talk to the students about safety topics.  At Kistler Elementary, Ms. Uter talked to the children about bicycle safety, and taught them how to wear a helmet properly. Ms. Uter also talked to the students at Dan Flood Elementary about general safety, including how to cross the street safely.
